Caraval – Non-spoiler Book Review

I gave this book 2.5 stars.
I don’t know how I feel about this particular book. I’m so angry, sad, destroyed, but mostly I’m annoyed. I was really expecting a lot from this book, because of all the fuss that it has been getting, but I couldn’t stand it. I had to stop over 4 times throughout reading this book because of how annoyed I got with the characters and situations of this story.
Caraval talks about the journey of Scarlett traveling and forming part of this cruel game, trying to save her sister. All the while trying to run from her father. These are some of the problems I found with this book:
– I’ve never met a character as weak as Scarlett. Every decision that she made throughout this book was based on fear, hence why she never got to enjoy the story, and I believe is the same I never got to enjoy the story. I’ve never met a character more afraid of anything like this child. Now, I understand that she had a difficult childhood and life, but honestly look at how her sister turned out. Scarlett annoyed me so much, I had to put the book down many times while reading it. She doubted everything, and second guessed anything, at some point I think I wanted to throw the book across the room.
– Caraval was such a frustrating game. It supposed to be this beautiful experience that is meant to be fun for the player, but I just grew annoyed and frustrated. The players of this game were conniving af, and I honestly couldn’t deal with their personalities. Everyone lies, everyone deceives, somehow everyone expects something but never give anything away. Poor Crimson, I felt so bad for her…(gotta read the book to know who Crimson is).
– The characters themselves were soo awful, Julian, her sister Tella, Legend–the master legend, not to mention her father, and her “fiancee” Oh Jesus! I just couldn’t stand them.
Now don’t get me wrong, the story itself was amazing, is just the way that she carried the story that annoyed me the most. I’ve never rolled my eyes so much throughout a book like I did in this particular one. The author is a great writer, and I really want to read the second book of this story because I feel like there’s potential, but this one disappointed me very much.
However, if you like playing sick and twisted games, this book is for you.
If I would’ve been Scarlett, at the end of the book, I would have said, fuck everybody, I’m out! And I would never come back again. Hell, what I really wanted Scarlet to do was to spit on Legend’s face, and then leave. I just hated this book sooo much.
